The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has thrown its support behind the proposal to create an electoral offences commission.
INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ogun state, NIYI IJALAYE, while featuring on Super FM’s Trends in the Nigerian Political Scene; said the commission will relieve INEC of the duties of prosecution, which will make the electoral body focused on conducting elections.
NIYI IJALAYE added that prosecution of electoral offences by an independent commission is very important, as elections determine a whole lot that happens in the wider society.
The INEC Resident Commissioner, added that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, both have a lot of responsibilities to handle, which will make it difficult for any of the 2 agencies to prosecute electoral offences.
