Every May 23 is the international day to eradicate Obstetric Fistula, which is a challenge that occurs in some women who have delayed childbirth or prolonged labor.
Women who have this health condition often leak urine, feces, or both, and they are often stigmatized and isolated.
A former Permanent secretary of the Ogun state Ministry of Health and a Gynecologist at a Specialist Hospital in Ijebu ode, Dr. ADESANYA EKUNDAYO AYINDE has called on Nigerians to embrace Prenatal, and antenatal care to minimize the cases of obstetric fistula.
The gynecologist noted that prolonged forced labor is a common cause of the obstetric Fistula and advocacies have been going on, to adopt cesarean option in such cases to save the mother and the child.
Dr. ADESANYA AYINDE added that the disease is predominant in the northern part of the country due to early child marriage and when people patronize quack traditional birth attendants.
The gynecologist further advised the government to prosecute quacks to make the world safe for women and children.
