Senate Amends Electoral Act To Allow Elected Officials Vote In Party Congresses And Conventions

The Senate has amended the Electoral Act, to allow elected office holders participate and vote in the conventions, congresses, or meetings of political parties.

The passage of the amendment was put forward by the Deputy President of the Senate OVIE OMO-AGEGE, who noted that the original Electoral Act had created a deficiency by banning elected officials from voting at party congresses.

It was thereafter passed after a speedy consideration of the bill, which passed first, second and third reading and approved by the entire Senate.

The House of Representatives is expected to pass the same amendment today.

The elected officials also known as ‘statutory delegates’ include the President, Vice President, members of the National Assembly, governors and their deputies, members of the State Houses of Assembly, local government chairmen, councilors, among others.
