President MUHAMMADU BUHARI has pledged that Nigeria will cut its emissions to net zero by the year 2060.
The President made this known in a speech delivered at the United Nations COP26 Leaders’ Summit held in Glasgow, Scotland.
According to a statement signed by his spokesman GARBA SHEHU, President BUHARI noted that attaining national and global climate change goals will require adequate technical and financial support to developing countries.
The President said that Nigerians are already aware of the need for urgent action on the environment, citing desertification in the North, floods in the center; pollution and erosion on the coast as enough evidence.
The President, however appealed for a gas-based energy transition in Nigeria, and requested international partners to finance projects using transition fuels such as gas in Nigeria.
